Understanding Meta Tags




Mata Tags are the very important part in the SEO. Every website has them and they determine their search optimization. They are a piece of code that is only visible in HTML. Meta tags are snippets of code that tell search engines important information about your web page, such as how they should display it in search results. They also tell web browsers how to display it to visitors. (Hardwick, 2022) Meta tags are the word which a person type in the search bar when looking for information.

  • Mata charset attribute sets the character encoding of an HTML document. It is extremely important that you explicitly declare the encoding of every HTML document; failing to do so will cause browsers to guess the encoding, which can lead to cross-site scripting attacks if they guess incorrectly. Setting the character encoding should be done in the Content-Type http header, but can also be set with the <meta charset> attribute. The charset specified in the meta element and http header must match. UTF-8 means that the text can be written in any languages. 
  • <meta name="description" content="Welcome to IKEA. Discover affordable furniture and home furnishing inspiration for all sizes of wallets and homes. Shop online or find a store near you."> This tag is shown by search engines as a small text item in the search results. It's aim is to persuade the people to click and enter the website.
  • Meta property -  they link social media to the website.
  • <meta name="robots" content="index, follow"> - a robots meta tag is an HTML snippet that tells search engine robots what they can and cannot do on a certain page. It lets you control crawling, indexing and how information from that page is displayed in the search results.
  • <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1"> gives the browser instructions on how to control the page's dimensions and scaling.
